A 4-minute read on why your user experience might be both working and broken; and how a few real-world tests reveal which it really is.
There’s a famous thought experiment in quantum physics (Schrodinger’s Cat) where a cat in a box is said to be both alive and dead at the same time, unless someone opens the box to see.
That’s exactly how most user experiences exist.
Until you lift the lid and test your product with real users, it occupies a strange state of UX superposition, simultaneously working and broken, clear and confusing, converting and leaking revenue, all at once.
You can have analytics, heatmaps, and dashboards full of data. But until you watch real people try to use your product, you’re guessing which version of reality you’re living in.
The Illusion of Certainty
Many teams assume everything’s fine because no one’s shouting. If traffic’s steady and conversions haven’t collapsed, they think, “We’re okay.” The truth is, friction often hides in plain sight. Users hesitate, misunderstand, or lose trust, and you rarely know until you watch it happen.
Opening the Box
User testing shows you what’s already true. When you run even a handful of sessions, you collapse uncertainty into clarity. You see what users really understand, where they pause, and what they silently skip.
Five or six moderated user tests can reveal more actionable truth than months of assumption. You’ll see your product as it truly behaves in the wild, thriving in some areas and struggling in others.
Why It Matters
You can’t fix what you haven’t seen. But when you finally observe users, their confusion, the friction, the delight, you gain something analytics never give you: empathy.
This empathy fuels better design, smarter decisions, and higher conversion. It’s how you turn uncertainty into improvement.
And once you’ve opened the box, you’ll never want to build blind again.
Final Thought
Your user experience isn’t good or bad; it’s both, until you look. Before launching your next feature, campaign, or redesign, run the simplest possible test. 6 users. Real tasks. Real feedback.
Lift the lid. Find out what’s alive. And if something’s quietly dying, you’ll catch it before it matters.
