UX Entropy: Why Every Product Tends Towards Chaos

In physics, entropy refers to a lack of order. Physicists tell us that systems naturally move towards disorder; entropy increases over time.

Left alone, buildings decay, gardens become overgrown, and rooms become untidy.

Digital experiences behave in much the same way.

Every product is constantly being affected by competing priorities, new requirements, stakeholder requests, a changing market and evolving customer expectations.

I call this UX Entropy: the tendency for digital products to become more complex, more confusing and less intuitive.

The Slow Drift Towards Complexity

Most digital products start life with a clear purpose, a simple user journey, and a focused set of features. Then reality arrives.

Features get added. Content evolves. Messaging changes. Each change is made with the best of intentions. Yet over time, friction, confusion and uncertainty quietly accumulate.

The Human Cause of Entropy

Most UX problems arise from smart people making sensible decisions from their own perspective. Every decision is rational, but collectively, complexity grows.

The product drifts away from simplicity.

Entropy Doesn’t Only Happen Slowly

UX decline can happen gradually over months or years, or a new release or redesign can also introduce entropy overnight.

Internally, everything appears ordered, yet when real users arrive, hidden entropy reveals itself. Users misunderstand terminology, overlook important information, follow unexpected paths, hesitate, lose confidence, and even abandon.

The Entropy Gap

One of the biggest risks is the gap between internal understanding and external reality.

Inside the organisation, everyone understands how the product works, the terminology makes sense, the navigation feels logical and what the new feature offers seems obvious.

But users don’t have the benefit of months of familiarity. What feels obvious internally can feel confusing to your users.

This gap is where entropy hides. And it’s often invisible until you observe real users interacting with your experience, in real-life ways.

Reveal Your Hidden Entropy

User testing reduces decision risk by exposing hidden entropy.

Seeing how real users interact with your product exposes misalignments, misunderstandings, friction points, and confidence gaps that are not easily apparent from inside the organisation.

Well-designed user testing shows you where clarity breaks down, where trust slips, where user effort creeps in, and where seemingly small issues would become expensive mistakes.

Final Thought

Every product evolves. Every organisation introduces complexity. Every release creates fresh uncertainty. So, entropy is inevitable.

The question is not whether it exists. The question is whether you’ll discover it before it affects your customer experience, conversion, or adoption.
